The Historical Egbema Egbesu Festival is Here Again in Ajakurama, The Ancestral Home of the Ijaw War Deity; Egbesu

The traditional headquarters of Egbema kingdom Ajakurama in Edo State, is in agog as the crème de la crème of the Izon nation and Niger Delta congregate to celebrate this year's Egbesu festival in grandeur.

The spectacular Egbesu festival is an annual ritual which commenced from time immemorial and since then its preservation has been an obligation to the Ibe-Ebidouwei 1 of the Niger Delta.

However, while custom and tradition is buried by the Iconoclasts, it is exhumed and preserved by those who value and respect the sanctity of ancient tradition.

Nonetheless, it can be agreed no less that the culture of a people defines as well as distinguishes them from others and ultimately make them stand tall in the comity of nations with rich cultural heritage.

Though, while it is abundantly evident that custom and culture overlap and often used interchangeably, we shall restrict ourselves to the age long practice of celebrating one of the ancient landmarks of the Izon nation; the supreme Egbesu festival.

The Egbesu fraternity is not just a cult of a sort to its adherents, it is a movement subscribed to by vast majority of Izons and Niger Deltans for the protection of her against external aggression.

The deity; Egbesu is believed to be sent from above as a shield to protecting the Izons from the evil forces who are hell bent on seeing to the extinction of her on the surface of the earth.

Therefore, it is not out of place to say that the deity; Egbesu is a god of justice who in absolute abhorrence to injustice and oppression provides protection and strengthens the weak and oppressed to fight and conquer their enemies.

The disciples of the supreme Egbesu fraternity prominent amongst them High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo aka General Tompolo G.O.C and Comrade Super Layefa Kamboh alias General Seven Seas have not only decided to preserve this ancient tradition of the Izon race, but are trying frantically to make this cherished tradition a center of attraction to the world.

This year's supreme Egbesu festival is unique as it is one of the programmes lined up or leading to the auspicious coronation of the Agadagba of Egbema kingdom, the Bini Pere IV HRM Amb. Meshack E.A Ubabiri, who by tradition is the head of the Supreme Egbesu Fraternity.

To demonstrate his undiluted love for the tradition of his forbearers, like in the Holy Book where King Solomon built a magnificent temple to house the Most High God, General Tompolo G.O.C has built a befitting temple to house the foremost god of war in Ijaw land.

To this end, as all believers of tradition converge in Ajakurama, in Egbema kingdom the ancestral home of the deity; Egbesu to commemorate this year's supreme Egbesu festival, we urge worshippers to devote time in praying for peace and prosperity in Ijaw nation as well as peaceful 2023 general elections in Nigeria.

It is our firm conviction that this year's supreme Egbema Egbesu festival will mark a new beginning and ignite the devout passion in Izons in the preservation of her rich tradition and cultural heritage.

Long live the Supreme Egbesu Festival

Long live Izon Nation

Long live Niger Delta

Long live the Republic of Nigeria

Above all, long live the patron of the supreme Egbesu High Chief Government Oweizide Ekpemupolo aka General Tompolo G.O.C.
